The latest company law covering website design is launched and Rocket has an easy solution.

A updated UK Ecommerce regulation came into force in January 2007 that could catch many companies completely unaware. It seems doubtful that many outside the corridors of some large building in Brussels have heard of the Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002, but non the less the First Company Law Amendment Directive has become UK law. So what is it and what does it affect?

The regulations will affect all company websites, whether they are full Ecommerce sites, or simple brochure websites as well as other forms of electronic communication such as emails and even SMS and MMS messages. The fundamental requirement of the new regulations is to display standardised information on one clear page of your site. This information includes:

  • Name of the organisation
  • Trading name if applicable, plus a ‘trading as’ statement
  • Geographic address – registered office
  • Email address
  • Company registration number
  • VAT number – even for static brochure style websites.

This regulation should be welcomed by designers across the online business, as it helps to clarify what information should be displayed to visitors. It should also be welcomed from a commercial point of view, as it will provide potential customers with peace of mind as it helps portray your business as trustworthy and law abiding. Anything that helps build trust between a business and its customers should be welcomed.
