It’s the talent contest that Simon Cowell wishes he’d thought of first. Which of our four project management finalists will impress us enough to be the winner?

In Part 1, we had narrowed down our choice of company project management software to four options:

The winner is…


After much deliberation, discussion and testing we finally decided the winner was… ActiveCollab.

The main reasons it won were that it appeared to be the software that most closely matched our way of working in terms of projects, milestones and tasks. It’s open source nature and expandability were also important, and being able to access it over the web really sold it to us.

So, we duly bought it, set it up and started putting our projects onto it. And so you would think the story ends.

Of course, no talent contest would be complete without a dose of last minute controversy and scandal, and this is no exception.

After using ActiveCollab for a few days, we started to become acutely aware of some of its limitations. Some we had known about (but had been willing to sacrifice) but others only became obvious when we had been using the software with real software, in real situations. There were also a number of bugs, which appeared minor, were really disruptive to our workflow. It appeared in danger of making us less efficient, rather than the intended result.
