World's No.1 chief Graphic Designer

By Andy on 1 May 07

Despite the immense amount of hard work, blood (never been good with a scalpel), sweat and tears that have gone in to my illustrious career as a Graphic Designer over the last 10+ years, long ago I resigned myself to the fact that there are better, more talented people in existence... Possibly somewhere in Norfolk, who knows.

But no, the powerhouse that is Google have decided that I fully deserve the right to be hailed the global Chief Graphic Designer as their listings clearly show:

Google search for "Chief Graphic Designer"

Google search result

That said, apparently Google are of the opinion that I also have a penchant for kicking children... I may sue:

Google search for "Andy Barratt kicked kids"

Perhaps this is a good illustration of just how Google rankings can reflect positively and negatively on those pages you may pay little attention to?

I feel our resident SEO Guru, Mr Cookson should enlighten us all.

Just another strange illustration of how search engines work, the Rocket website is ranked 8th in the world for the search "top 10 ghost websites" and has already brought traffic to the website. Hope they found what they were looking for!

I'm not sure about enlightening us all about the strange things that are thrown up by search results, but I do think this is a great example of how search engines work.

As humans we tend to attribute all sorts of things with the same logic capacity and thought processes that we have. We think that our pets think like we do, we think that inanimate objects are out to get us and we think that search engines know what we are searching for. Well the truth is they don't.

Your dog doesn't love you, he is just responding to your attention in an instinctive way that was fixed into his genes back when his ancestors lived in packs.

Similarly, search engines don't understand what your searching for. They are just providing a set of results based upon a limited set of logical instructions that its programmer has given to it.

In the second search, its not found a useful web page detailing all the kids that Andy has kicked over the years. It's simply looking for a page which contains some or all those individual words.

What this does tell us is that we have to be extra careful when writing for the web, you never know how search engines will read your website!

Or, this whole exercise could just mean that Andy is a secret child-kicker!
